The Aviation Safety Competition (ASC) is a Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers (SIAE) initiated project. The target participants are from Upper Secondary, Junior College, Polytechnic, Tertiary and University students. The overall aim of this competition is to generate interest in aviation and to encourage them to consider careers in the aviation industry. Our mission is to build an aviation culture for our NGAP. (Next Generation of Aviation Professionals).
This year, the theme “Safe Skies” will be the second competition of the series. The program is set to launch in late 2015 spreading over to 2016 with a series of lectures and talks conducted by industry experts, including senior practitioners of agencies involved in aviation safety, flight operations, navigation and air traffic management. Visits to aviation facilities would also be scheduled for participants to get a feel of the real life of the components of the aviation industry such as aircraft and airport operations. Examples and case studies in flight operations and tracking will be included in lectures.
Students in teams of 3 to 5 will select a case for analysis and presentation related to the topic. The entire program will culminate with a contest in May 2016, where a panel of judges will select 1 winning team from each category among the 3 short-listed entries.

Rules and Regulations
1] Rules
1.1. This Competition is open to all Upper Secondary, Junior College, Polytechnic, Tertiary and University students in Singapore divided into two groups:
Group A: Open categories for the Institutes of Higher Learning (Polytechnics and Universities)
Group B: School categories for Secondary, ITE and Junior Colleges
(Note : If there are to be any mixed categories in the same team, we will default to the higher category)
1.2. Teams do not have to be affiliated with an educational institution to participate.
1.3. For teams associated to educational institutions, there is no limit to the number of teams participating from each educational institution.
1.4. All decisions and selection processes shall be deemed final and binding by SIAE.
1.5. By submitting your registration for the competition, you have agreed to allow SIAE the rights to use all project materials associated with your participation in the Aviation Safety Competition.
2] Eligibility and Registration
2.1. Each team may register (team registration) up to a maximum of 5 (minimum 3) including the Team leader.
2.2. A participant shall not be registered to represent more than 1 team.
3] Registration Fee and Payment
3.1. Registration date starts from 15 Nov 2015 till 22 Jan 2016.
3.2. Registration fee amounts to S$10 per student.
3.3. All teams must be registered with SIAE by the stipulated deadline.
3.4. To make amendments such as spelling after submission, email the changes to events@siae.org.sg before 22 Jan 2016. Provide as much details as much possible for quick processing. Late submissions will not be processed.
4] Presentation and timings
4.1. 3 teams will be shortlisted as finalists and these teams will be required to present to the judges during the finals.
4.2. The format for the presentation is open.
4.3. The content of the presentation should include (but not limited) the following aspects to demonstrate the understanding of the project:
- Engineering aspects & Maintenance Practices
- Aircraft Design & Certification
- Flight and Technical Operations
- Air Traffic Control and Management
- Human Factors
- Aircraft, Airport and Flight Operations
- Airworthiness and Regulations.
4.4. Teams must provide all equipment including electronics for the presentation. Where available, some common items such as screen, computer or projector MAY be provided. This, along with any special requirements that are needed should be discussed with the organisation committee prior to the event.
4.5. All facts and figures used in the presentations are to be accurate.
4.6 Time limits are to be no longer than 15 minutes.
4.7. Presentations are timed from the first word spoken or at the start of any action, music, video, song etc to the last word of “I/we are ready for the judge’s question”.
4.8. Points will be deducted for every 5 second range over the time limit up to a maximum of 20 points.
4.9. If the team go over 2 minutes over their allotted time, they will be asked to stop.
4.10. In the event of electronic equipment malfunction, the presentation timing will pause. The team will be granted up to 3 minutes to correct the problem. Once the problem is repaired, or the 3 minute mark is reached, timing for presentation will continue from where it was paused. The team must resume from the point where the problem occurred with either corrected equipment or an appropriate alternate method of delivery.
5] Assessment & Judging Criteria
5.1. Assessment and judging will be based on the overall aspects of :
- Overall understanding of aviation and safety
- Depth and scope of research
- Lessons learnt from the exercise
- Presentation
6] Disqualification
6.1. No refund will be made to any teams being disqualified.
6.2 Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification. If it is discovered at a later time that a presentation is copied, the team(s) will be stripped of any award(s) presented.
6.3 Safety is priority one. All safety regulations must be adhered when using equipment and props. Any team(s) who fail to do so will be disqualified.
6.4. The ‘ruling’ committee may disqualify any team who has/have not followed the published rules. Disqualified teams are not eligible to receive an award. If an award has already been presented, it will be forfeited to the next deserving competitor.
7] Disclaimer
7.1. All registered teams will be published on SIAE marketing materials.
7.2. All submitted entries, photographs and materials shall be properties of SIAE.
7.3. SIAE may use these entries at any events at its discretion, without prior written approval from the participating teams.
7.4. The above rules and regulations are current at the time of printing. The organisers reserve the right to modify said rules and regulations as they deem fit.

A written essay with maximum 2000 words is expected from all teams. PDF is the preferred format. Additional media submissions, including all other illustrations, graphics, videos are welcome. A complete bibliography is required.
