Rotorcraft Preliminary Design
Dr Simone Weber, Predesign Engineer for Future Projects at
Airbus Helicopters Deutschland GmbH
This talk will give a brief glimpse into the history of vertical flight while highlighting the
technical challenges of rotorcraft design. This is followed by describing the role of
predesign, specification of needs and the preliminary sizing process of rotorcraft, also
taking into account operational cost aspects. The presentation will conclude by giving
some insight into future challenges through the increasing environmental awareness and
availability of state-of-the-art technologies.

About the Speaker
Dr Simone Weber has been working at Airbus Helicopters since 2008. Since then, she has
had the opportunity to work in different engineering sectors at the company. Simone
completed her PhD in Aerospace Engineering at Cranfield University in 2019. During her
studies at Cranfield University, she was responsible for the technical lead of the UK
governmental funded research programme “BladeSense”. In 2017 she also was listed as
one of “The Daily Telegraph’s Top 50 Women in Engineering” under 35. Last year Simone
joined the predesign team working now on innovative future projects.
